Our projects at a Glance

We provide safe havens, medical care, and new opportunities for Zanzibar’s street dogs.

CARE

Care & Protection

Consistent access to food and clean water is a key part of our work and is essential to the health and well-being of street dogs in Zanzibar. Our feeding stations are much more than simple bowls; they are custom-made “dog bars” designed for durability, hygiene, and sustainable use.

Our dedicated TAJDO team conducts weekly rounds to regularly clean the stations and restock them with fresh food and clean water. This not only reduces the spread of disease but also builds trust with the street dogs. This trust is essential for providing better medical care and protection for the animals in the future.

To further protect the dogs from Zanzibar’s harsh climate, with intense sun, heat, and heavy rainfall, we are building secure dog shelters at various locations in local villages. These provide the animals with shelter, rest, and a safe haven from storms and adverse weather conditions.

EDUCATION

Education and Enlightenment

TAJDO is committed to raising sustainable awareness of the needs and challenges faced by stray dogs in Zanzibar. Many people have little knowledge of how to interact with these animals, which often leads to fear, rejection, or abuse. Religious prejudices are frequently cited as justification, even though no religion justifies violence or suffering toward animals.

That is why we place great emphasis on awareness-raising, education, and respectful dialogue with the local population. Our goal is to promote understanding, compassion, and responsibility toward animals and to help people understand the importance of respectful coexistence between humans and animals.

At the same time, we want to show that even small actions can make a big difference, whether through providing water, food, shelter, or treating the dogs with kindness. Through education, we lay the foundation for long-term change and a future in which humans and animals in Zanzibar can live together peacefully and respectfully.

Medicine

Medical Care

Working closely with local veterinarians, we regularly spay, neuter, vaccinate, and treat stray dogs to prevent suffering early on and save lives that are already in danger. Preventive medical care is a central component of our sustainable work in Zanzibar.

In addition to spaying and neutering and vaccinations, we also treat acute injuries, skin conditions, infections, and serious illnesses such as tumors or cancer. Without medical help, many of these dogs would have little chance of survival.

Regular treatments such as deworming, flea and tick prevention, and general health checkups are also part of our work. With every treatment, we give the animals not only new hope but also the chance for a healthier, safer, and more dignified life.

ADOPTION

Successful Placement

Although our goal is to improve the lives of all street dogs in the long term, there are animals that are too young, injured, or too weak to survive on the streets on their own. These vulnerable dogs, in particular, need protection, intensive care, and the chance at a safe home.

Through our adoption program, we give these special cases a second chance at a life full of love, safety, and security. We carefully match the dogs with responsible and loving families who can offer them a permanent home.

To ensure the long-term well-being of every single animal, we place great emphasis on a responsible adoption process. This includes thorough interviews and screenings of potential adopters to ensure the best possible match between person and dog.

Every successful adoption means far more than just a new home; it is a story of hope, trust, and transformation.

CAMPAIGNS

Sterilization and Vaccination Campaigns

Spay/neuter surgeries and rabies vaccinations are at the heart of our long-term mission in Zanzibar. Through regular spay/neuter and vaccination campaigns, we provide urgently needed medical care, surgical procedures, and sustainable control of the stray dog population.

These measures are crucial for preventing disease and suffering, improving the dogs’ long-term health, and reducing uncontrolled breeding. At the same time, they help strengthen the coexistence between humans and animals and sustainably improve the quality of life for the local population.

Through our work, we not only support animal welfare but also make an important contribution to public health and alleviate the burden on government structures. By promoting the One-Health-Concept, the close connection between humans, animals, and the environment, we are jointly laying the foundation for a healthier, safer, and more sustainable future in Zanzibar.
